Spotlight on Fuel Cell Early Markets 2007 Pre-conference Seminar: The Role of Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in Future Energy Markets

PORTLAND, Maine, April 2007 – Why are fuel cells and hydrogen considered a necessary part of a sustainable energy strategy? Answering this question will be the central theme of “The Role of Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in Future Energy Markets” – a three-hour intensive workshop to be held on 11 June at the Brussels Marriott Hotel in Brussels, Belgium. This workshop will precede one-and-a-half days of expert presentations as part of IntertechPira and Core Technology Ventures’ Fuel Cell Early Markets 2007: Policy, Finance, & Applications.

Instructors, Dr. Rupert Gammon and Dr. Christopher Hebling, will demonstrate why hydrogen and fuel cells are almost certain to become key components in energy networks. The workshop will outline in a logical sequence the arguments that explain how such technologies are increasingly seen as essential in meeting the challenges of security of energy supply and climate change. It will explore the pivotal role of hydrogen and fuel cells in grid balancing and carbon emission reduction. Having established that such “market pull” exists, the workshop will outline the fuel supply options and end user applications for fuel cells and give an overview of how the markets for these technologies are expected to develop over time.

Key topics to be covered:

  • Drivers for the introduction of low-carbon energy technologies
  • Grid balancing and the role of hydrogen
  • The various roles of fuel cells
  • Fuel supply chains
  • Transition pathways towards a “low-carbon economy”
  • Early adopter markets

This is a must-attend workshop for anyone needing to rapidly acquire an unbiased, accurate insight into this diverse set of technologies. It has been designed in particular, with investors, equity analysts, fund managers, energy system managers, and policy makers in mind who increasingly need to make informed decisions about this unfolding sector. In just three hours, you will learn what you need to know about the importance of fuel cell technologies, the primary roles of hydrogen and fuel cells in sustainable energy systems, and emerging early market opportunities.

Dr Rupert Gammon is a Visiting Researcher at Loughborough University and Director and co-founder Bryte Energy, a consultancy that specializes in strategic analysis of energy markets and the design and implementation of low-carbon energy systems. Dr Gammon is a director of the UK Hydrogen Association, serves on the Infrastructure and Renewables Task Group of the London Hydrogen Partnership, chairs the Midlands Hydrogen Forum and is a Visiting Researcher at Loughborough University.

Dr Christopher Hebling studied Physics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. His doctoral dissertation thesis, performed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, was on simulation, realization and characterization of crystalline silicon thin-film solar cells. In January 1999 Dr. Christopher Hebling started the Micro Energy Technology Group at ISE in order to study and develop small energy converters to supplement or substitute batteries in portable electronic devices with a power demand in the range from a few Milliwatts to some 100 Watts. Since October 2001 Christopher Hebling is heading the ‘Energy Technology’ Department of ISE which is mainly involved in Hydrogen Technology (fuel processing, electrolysis and fuel cells).

IntertechPira, with offices in Portland, Maine and London, UK, provides events, training, online information, and publications across a wide range of niche commodities and disruptive technologies affecting industry. Since 1975 IntertechPira has attracted the participation of more than 47,000 delegates in over 450 conferences, including 12 international fuels related events from commercializing clean coal, hydrogen production and storage, photovoltaics, clean fuels, decentralized power, and commercializing fuel cell vehicles to natural gas and power generation, hybrid electric vehicles, and vehicle emissions.

Core Technology Ventures provides a broad range of advisory services to a wide variety of alternative energy participants. Core Technology Ventures is comprised of alternative energy experts with a considerable advisory track record. The team helps both developers and financiers to realize their full sector potential.
